Many tourists have a bucket list – a list of destinations or attractions they hope to see in their lifetime. Some of the most popular examples include a trip to the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Colosseum in Rome. In our previous study, we named the most disappointing countries to visit in the world, but what about the individual tourist attractions themselves? Which ones are oversold, have lost their magic, or are victims of their own success?
To determine which tourist attractions are most disappointing to visitors for the second year running, we analyzed 99,547 visitor reviews across 200 of the most visited tourist attractions in the world, to find out which famous attractions are most and least likely to disappoint.
Key findings:
- Alton Towers in the UK is the most disappointing tourist attraction in the world for the second year running (38.2% of all reviews are negative).
- The Georgia Aquarium and the Horseshoe Casino, both in the U.S., are the 2nd and 3rd most disappointing attractions (19.6% and 18.6% of reviews are negative).
- Six of the top 10 most disappointing tourist attractions from around the world are in North America.
- The UK and Canada are the countries with the most disappointing tourist attractions (both 7.9%), followed by the US (7.5%).
- Seattle (8.9%), Budapest (6.3%), and London and Bangkok (both 6%) are the cities with the most disappointing tourist attractions.
- Mini Mundo and Lago Negro, both in Brazil, had the fewest negative reviews (0% negative reviews) making them the joint least disappointing tourist attractions.
Most disappointing tourist attractions
1. Alton Towers, United Kingdom (38.2%)
For the second year running, Alton Towers in Staffordshire, UK is the world’s most disappointing tourist attraction. Over a third (38.2%) of the theme park’s reviews report a negative experience including crowding and poor value for money. For context, the average rate of negative reviews for attractions in the study is 5.2%.
Although the park ranks top of the list again, it did slightly better than in last year’s study where 49.4% of reviews were negative, suggesting it might be improving its services.
Originally a private estate belonging to an Earl, the grounds were opened in the 19th century to raise funds. [1] Inspired by Disneyland’s success in America, by the 1980s the park had transformed into a theme park. With 10 themed areas spread across 910 acres, Alton Towers is the UK’s biggest theme park. [2]

Looking more closely at the themes of negative reviews, Alton Towers had the highest percentage of reviews that specifically complained about value for money (15% of all reviews compared to a 1.3% average for the study). Inspecting the reviews, it’s not the rides that often disappoint customers, but the customer service. Common complaints include misleading ticket information, and expectations to pay for overpriced add-ons (such as expensive food and drink, or access to different areas of the park).
2. Georgia Aquarium, United States (19.6%)
The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, USA, is home to tens of thousands of animals, with attractions including whale sharks, beluga whales and manta rays. [3]
However, the aquarium is second on the list of most disappointing tourist attractions; 19.6% of reviews include negative words. 10% of visitors described it as being crowded or having access issues, and 6.2% did not think the experience was good value for money.
3. Horseshoe Casino, United States (18.6%)
The Horseshoe Casino in Louisiana is an urban casino with table games, slots, poker, and a range of dining options including a steakhouse and a 24/7 burger bar. [4]
This casino comes third on the list, with 18.6% of visitors leaving reviews that mentioned a negative experience. 16.6% of these reviews included words and phrases like “boring”, “broken down”, “overrated”, and “needs restoration”, suggesting that the casino’s amenities are not up to standard.
4. Széchenyi Baths and Pool, Hungary (16.6%)
The Széchenyi Baths and Pool in Hungary’s capital Budapest is the largest medicinal bath in Europe and has been a wellness tourist destination since 1913. [5]
However, 16.6% of people who left a review of the baths online reported a less than satisfactory experience. Besides swimwear, visitors should also expect to pack some extra patience, as the baths ranked fifth worst in the crowd and accessibility category (7.2% of all reviews compared to the 2.1% average).
5. Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, Toronto (16%)
Based in Toronto at the base of the CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada features Canada’s largest indoor aquarium with over 20,000 aquatic animals and interactive exhibits. [6]
In our analysis, 16% of visitors left a negative review of this aquarium, including 9.6% who mentioned overcrowding issues (making it the third worst in this category) and 5% who did not feel it was good value for money.

A sizeable 15% of all reviews included terms related to money or value.
Coming second is the Space Needle in Seattle, United States. In total 8.4% of reviews of this large museum and library felt that the price of entry was too high. Visitors to Seattle may want to consider a visit to Kerry Park instead for a free view of the Space Needle. [7]

Methodology
We collected 99,547 reviews from the 200 most-reviewed tourist attractions in 32 countries around the world.
This was narrowed down from a list of 5,832 different tourist attractions in 50 of the most visited countries from EuroMonitor’s Top 100 City Destinations report and Mastercard’s ‘Global Cities Index’. Attractions were discounted if they had less than 2,000 reviews, Russia and Ukraine were removed due to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Israel was removed due to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Data was collected in April 2026.
To analyze which attractions are most disappointing, we looked at the occurrence of a set list of keywords to determine the words that are most frequently used to describe a destination. 90 keywords were included in total, and the study discounted false positives (e.g. ‘not disappointing’). Examples of keywords used include “disappointing”, “boring”, and “inaccessible”.
